Get To Know The Romance Reader Tag

As promised, I’m back with more book tags!! This one was created by FallingForRomance and I spotted Chanelle’s post which inspired me to do it. Trying to keep the lollygagging to a minimum here so I’m going right in>>>

What is your romance origin story? (How you came to read your first romance novel).

I came by romance novels thanks to a combination of WhittyNovels and Red White and Royal Blue. I was squarely in the YA fantasy side of things until one fine day the demon bird app popped off about a FSOTUSxPrince of UK which was just πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€. And anyways, I have always been deep in the Jily fanfic side of AO3 so anything related to a fic AU was just *chefs kiss* After RWRB, Whitney started talking more and more about romances and I just kind of tumbled down that cliff with her. I think the real tipping point might have been Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren though. I remember immediately rereading that then going down a CLo black hole.

If you could be the lead in a romance novel, who would be the author and what’s one trope you’d insist be in the story?

It’s a three way tie between Casey McQuiston, Sonali Dev, and Talia Hibbert. I’m a big fan of enemies-friends-lovers with a dash of fake dating but also best friends to lovers ALSO with fake dating really has its appeals. BUTTTT then again I’m ace and would love to live in some rural village and interact with only the local shop folks and no one else so LOL

What is a romance you’ve read this year that you want more people to read?

OOOHHHH Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite and Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert go so hard!!!! Eve Brown happens to be my favourite from The Brown Sisters trilogy and Lady’s Guide was an curveball surprise and I loved it so much!! Olivia Waite’s other book is great too!

What is your favorite romance subgenre? What subgenre have you not read much from?

I’ve read a boatload of historical romances and contemporary romances. I’ve also done erotica and erotic romances too which are *eyebrow wiggle* and short. I haven’t done much of paranormal, sci-fi, or fantasy romance though. I feel like might have a heavier dose of world building and I don’t really look for that in romance novels. I just need a speedy dose of serotonin. Although if you count SJM books as fantasy romance then maybe I have read those… I personally do not lolol

Who is one of your auto-buy romance authors?

I know this question asks for one but I’m going to list multiple because there are no rules and I do what I want. So top of the list is Talia Hibbert. Then we’ve got Lyssa Kay Adams, Sonali Dev, Alisha Rai, Casey McQuiston, Chelsea M Cameron, and Rebekah Weatherspoon to name a few established names. Some recently found/debuted but I KNOW I’m going to be obsessed with are Alexis Daria, Emily Henry, and Alexandria Bellefleur.

How do you typically find romance recommendations? (Goodreads, Youtube, Podcasts, Instagram..)

I literally just text my friends at this point. It started out by religiously watching Whitney’s wrap ups, then deep diving some trusted Twitter friends and then the recommendations on Goodreads just started readjusting to romance. I also follow my fave romance authors so if they recommend a book, I’ll add it to the list. Higher priority for better covers oops.

What is an upcoming romance release you’re excited for?

I’m about to fall off my seat for Isn’t It Bromantic by Lyssa Kay Adams. The Bromance Book Club books have quickly become my favourite and the fourth book is about the character who up until now has only been the poop joke comic relief (hilarious btw poopoopeepee jokes are my niche). I am STOKED for his book.

What is one misconception about romance you would like to lay to rest?

OOOHHH so many so so so many. I myself was one of those ~romance is airheaded and sexist~ bullshit but like have you READ a contemporary romance? They’re not. Maybe pre 2010 they’re hella sus but we’ve moved beyond the need for aggressive alpha male romantic interests we’re going GAY babes.

Also my main issue with so many romance haters is that they think romance is low brow or badly written. It’s a separate genre, you cannot expect romance novel to have the stylistic consistency with a realistic fiction or literary fiction novel. It’s a niche getaway from reality to just immerse yourself in fluff. I don’t think the genre should be expected to tackle major sociopolitical topics in depth. That’s literally not why I read them; I read them for smut and fluff GEEZ. Of course, a lot of romances do tend to take on difficult topics like racism, ableism, homophobia, classism, and the like but it’s done in a gentler way where it’s wrapped into the story and not the central plot point.

I have this whole rant about literary elitism and pick me misogyny coming from people who call romance “bad literature” that goes even farther than the above paragraph is but it would be so incoherent and so filled with anger. Idk if I want to put y’all through that. It’s one thing to simply say romance books aren’t your thing because you simply don’t like romance. It’s entirely another to compare romance to genres that have nothing in common with it.

Basically @ ppl calling romance bad writing: just say you hate fun and be on your merry high horse way. I hope you get saddle sores πŸ–•πŸ™ƒ

Who is the most recent romance reading content creator you came across that you’d like to shoutout?

I must admit I haven’t followed anyone new in AGES but Maha, Sumedha, Tianna, Rameela, May, and Thya have some great romance reviews. Chanelle’s blog is always a pleasure to read and also the inspiration for this post plus my general desire to do more tags on my blog :))))

If someone had never read a romance before and asked you to recommend the first 3 romances that come to mind as places to start, what would those recommendations be?

So for softcore smut I’d suggest Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, Pride Prejudice and Other Flavours by Sonali Dev, and The Boyfriend Project by Farah Rochon. Two of three of these are the start to trilogies so that’s an open gateway and something about CMQ’s writing just gets you mad thirsty for more of their books.

For moderate smut just read The Brown Sisters Trilogy by Talia Hibbert or The Bromance Book Club series by Lyssa Kay Adams. Again, trilogies to get you hooked on more 😏😏😏😏

After that you can then just dive off the cliff into the raunchier stuff on your own lol. This is verbatim advice I have given to multiple people and it has never failed me.

The darker underbelly of my romance addiction was sjm but we speak not of those. That smut and romance doesn’t even come CLOSEE to the god tier content we get from the authors I’ve listed above.

Thank you for reading folks. I’ll see y’all in my next post, enjoy the smut :))))))
